Have you ever read a book, a good book, but then when you were finished and you started daydreaming about the characters and the story, your mind took the story somewhere else? This happens to me a lot. Hopefully it happens to you too and I’m not just sitting here looking crazy. I wanna say that I’m not bashing any books or authors, because the books that I warp in my mind are some of my favorites, but – call it a case of too much Tumblr fan-fiction – sometimes I like to twist things around a bit.
I finished reading Maybe Not last weekend, and I loved it. You can read my review here. I thought the characters were really fun, the sex was awesome, and the story was entertaining. But as is the case with most novellas, it’s never enough, and I’m always left wanting more. I believe that’s a compliment to author. Well, I was taking a shower later that day and I started daydreaming (as is usually the case, which is why my showers are forever long), but I started adding scenes and changing outcomes. I started wondering how cool it would be if, like with music, authors had remixes to their books. In this particular case, the Maybe Not (remix) by Colleen Hoover would ft. Mia Asher.
Some spoilers ahead: See, Maybe Not goes a little like this: there’s this guy who lives in an apartment with his two roommates, and one day he comes home to find a bombshell sharing his bathroom. They sniff at each other for a bit, while trading barbs, until one day they just bone, and it’s amazing. The girl hates the guy and won’t let him get close, but the guy’s feelings keep growing deeper. He finds out that she has a pretty shitty past (abuse, abandonment, and the like), which is why she’s so closed off. Some more stuff happens and about 130 pages later everyone’s happy and in love (to be expected). I loved all of that, but in the remixed version, there’d be at least 200 pages added on and a hell of a lot more angst.
This is where Mia Asher comes in. A few months ago I read a book by her – let’s just called it The Book That Shall Not Be Named – that makes me want to burn my house down every time I think about it. For some reason, I kept adding Mia Asher beats to a particular scene during Maybe Not. In this scene, Bridgette brings home a date because Warren is getting too close and she wants to keep him at a distance. This scene ends how you would expect a CoHo scene to end, but I kept thinking what if? What if Mia had written that scene? View Spoiler » She probably would’ve slept with the guy, broken Warren’s heart, hated herself for it, but then be too proud to apologize and risk her heart for love. « Hide Spoiler It would’ve been brutal, and I would’ve loved it. And I would’ve burned the world down.
I just think it’s so interesting how different each author’s voice is, and how most stories have the same general line, but because of each author’s style and imagination, one general theme can become vastly different books.
So what’s the point of this post? I want to know what book you’ve imagined remixing, and which author would feature. This isn’t intended to insult anyone’s work, I just think it would be fun to picture our favorite characters if they were adopted by a different parent.
